Holmes' Violin

Psst, want to read these weird and obscure Italian Lupin comics? You can find them here. I was not involved with the scans or translations of these comics whatsoever, so all credit belongs to the team behind it. They did a wonderful job perserving a niche era of the franchise's history!

- Koichi's characterization in this comic is really cool. I like how they write him like a detective you would see in a film noir, with him even providing quips and observations that match the style of that genre. However, I stand by that his best moments are in the opening pages, as they do a better job balancing his stern professionalism and his role as a comedy relief.

- The art in this comic is fantastic, and in my opinion, is the strongest element of it. I personally find the story to be rather... weird, but the incredible use of shadows and ink makes up for it. Koichi's introduction, where he's lighting his cigarette, is an excellent example of this. I like his design too! He's wearing his sweater vest again!

- Koichi's angst about how the law operates -- a rare interpretation of him, but his monologue about his frustration how the corrupt upperclass can easily escape punishment is fascinating. Something that is consistent with his previous depictions in this is how deeply he cares about justice, and how he doesn't turn a blind eye. It's cool to see his doggedness come out through another criminal besides Lupin.

- The scene where Kramer's men are roughing him up. It's hard for me to read because of how brutally realistic it is, but I love how he doesn't give into their threats, even when his life is (potentially) on the line. On a different note, Koichi, you have an ulcer?! My poor baby...

- Koichi's grand reemergence at the end of the comic, where the damage has been done to him is visible (broken arm, bruised nose, bandaids), but I love how triumphant he is about successfully arresting Kramer for good. Of course I don't like seeing him hurt, but he's drawn so handsomely in these moments!

To Be Lupin

- This is my favorite out of the Millennium the comics, I love the art style and the way it plays with and warps the audience's expectations. There's not too much to say about Koichi in this, but his hair is adorably fluffy in the 'sitcom' moments. Why did they draw him that way? No idea, but it's so cute!

Prophecies from Another World

- Another quick entry for this one, as Koichi only has a cameo appearence in this one. I quite like his design in this and I would love to see more of this artist's rendition of him, but I have to tease him for a moment -- I love how serious and smoldering he looked in his first appearence in this series, but look at how goofy and sweet he is here!
